A Simple Overview of Easy Enhancements that Any Boater Can Handle! From Increasing Functionality to Enhancing Visual Appeal
Panels are somehow one of the most used parts on a boat and simultaneously, one of the most overlooked parts when it comes to enhancements. People seem to focus on enhancing the more obvious parts like the motor or a new depth finder, but panels are capable of much more than just holding switches. From consolidating equipment control in one location to simply making the panel more visually appealing, there are a range of projects you can handle to get more out of what you already have.
The question isn’t why, but rather “why not”? If you can get more functionality out of your equipment, then you should. Below we will look at some simple enhancements any boater can do, the time it will take you, and what you might need to complete the project. Let’s dive in.
Increasing functionality
The most obvious types of enhancements are those that increase the functionality of your panel. So, for example, you may add specified switches that can perform unique tasks or maybe you want to install a USB charging port for your phone.
Enhanced Switches – Estimated Time: 15 minutes
Some switches such as momentary switches allow you to activate equipment without having to shut it off. Think about your horn. It makes noise until you release the switch. That is a great example of a momentary switch. There are switches with three positions so you can raise and lower your trim tabs. One switch even offers ON-ON positions. The point is, make sure you are using the right switches not the ones that were there when you bought the boat.
Easy to Read Meters – Estimated Time: 15 - 30 minutes
When it comes to boats, meters are one of those long-lasting products that we boaters don’t tend to think about often. They are there, they do their job, end of story. The thing is, meters are also one of those things that, once replaced, you tend to pay more attention to. After replacing the meters on my dash, I noticed that I paid more attention to their readings and got a better feel for my boat in general.
USB Charger – Estimated Time: 15 - 30 minutes
One thing everyone hates is a dead phone, especially if you are out on the water. By installing a USB charger, you eliminate that problem entirely. USB chargers are easy to install and are essential in a pinch. Maybe your boat already has a USB charger. That’s great, but a lot of boats don’t. Besides, when was the last time you looked at your USB charger to inspect for signs of corrosion? Hmmm.
Enhancing Visual Appeal
The other types of enhancements that we’ll discuss are those that enhance the visual quality of your panels. Something as simple as new switch covers can go a long way to give your panel a makeover. To make it even better, most of these enhancements take only minutes.
Laser Etched Covers – Estimated Time: 30 Seconds (each)
Ok, so we covered switch covers, but we didn’t cover laser etched. Whereas most switch covers out there are printed, laser etched switch covers stand the test of time. They will not peel or fade over time. I mean, they literally cannot. Just as with regular switch covers, laser etched switch covers install in seconds. They give the cleanest appearance you’ve ever seen on a switch cover.
New Panel Blanks – Estimated Time: 30 minutes – 1 hour
While we are enhancing the visual appearance of our panel, we should consider a new panel itself. Well, not a new panel, but a new panel body. Panels need to be able to handle the toughest conditions out there from UV exposure to moisture and salt. Once you have your new panel blank ready, all that is left is to install it. Make sure that your panels are made from either Lexan or 5052 H32 marine grade aluminum.
Things to be aware of
There are a lot of considerations to account for when making changes to your panels. The first thing to consider is the backside of the panel itself. Be careful when removing the panel not to yank or pull too hard. Without knowing exactly what is back there, you can potentially damage wires or connection points. This is why it is so important to carefully remove a panel. The safest bet is to go nice and slow. You want to pay attention to the wiring while you're back there. One trick is to use your phone and take a photo of the back before you make any changes. You can even take periodic photos as pieces of equipment are removed so that you can have a step by step slide show. That way if you do make a mistake, you can go back to the proper photo for reference.
One thing you may want to consider is to use pre-made wire jumpers when installing or changing anything on your panel. They are built to save time and money and simplify the installation process. Wire jumpers can take hours to make on your own and are only a few dollars to purchase. It just makes sense to order pre-made wire jumpers rather than manufacturing your own.
